Independence, Texas
Independence, Texas, was established in 1835 as Cole’s Settlement and settlers first arrived in the 1820’s. Early well known Texans lived here such as Sam Houston, who was a U.S. Senator at the time of his residency. Independence was one of the wealthiest towns in Texas because of plantations. Winning a bid, Independence became the first home of Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. This furthered the economic growth. During this time, Independence became the Baptist hub of Texas. Growth and prosperity continued until the Civil War when the town’s economy declined with the abolishment of slavery and the Santa Fe Railroad bypassing the town. As a result, people searched for opportunities elsewhere leading to the decline of the town’s economy. As if a domino effect, Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor suffered financially and were relocated to Waco and Belton in 1886; dooming the Independence community.
